The Aftermath of the Watts Rebellion (Prints) | acrylic based, newspaper, and graphite.
“The Aftermath of the Watts Rebellion ” is an art piece that (re)engages the 1965 Watts Rebellion and is 1 of the 3 pieces that make up the forthcoming Black August exhibition. Here I am revisiting the child in me, and kind of imagining what the experiences of the children in this painting was doing during this revolutionary time period. The primary medium used for this piece is Acrylic paint. It also utilizes graphite and print mediums such as newspapers as a way to historicize the subject. The newspaper segments placed on the children clothing encapsulates both the urgency and implications rendered from the Watts Rebellion. And while all of the elements considered should be left to the viewer’s interpretation, the artist wants to highlight the Rose on the right side of the canvas - it speaks to both the process and the intention of preservation.
