Here I taught an original class called The Story From Within; It focuses on three major components. Reading, Discussion and Writing. Over the course of the designated time frame participants are learning about political actors in both the 19th and 20th centuries who while being incarcerated wrote transformative bodies of work that are still critical to our understanding of the mass incarceration regime today. Participants engage in discussions surrounding the content produced by political actors such as Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, George Jackson, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Marcus Garvey, etc. Lastly, each participant creates a series of short stories, letters, and or poems that inform people of both their experiences before and during incarceration.
