By Any Means Necessary (Prints) - Malcolm X : acrylic based, newspaper, and graphite.
By Any Means Necessary is an 48x 48 mixed media art piece inspired by the legacy of Malcolm X. The primary medium used for this work was Acrylic paint. It also utilizes the print medium “newspaper” as a way to historize the subject’s intellectual current, untimely demise, and the racial climate that the subject had to navigate during his time as both an activist and intellectual. The newspaper segment placed on the subject’s face is a clipping from an article written about Congressman Powell views on the urgency of freedom in the Muhammad Speaks newspaper. The newspaper segments placed on the subjects coat are from the Chicago Tribune and Brown Daily Herald and they speak to the death and ideology of Malcolm X. Additionally, while all of the elements considered should be left to the viewer’s interpretation, the artist wants to highlight the words transcribed on the right cheek of the subject’s face -This excerpt was pulled from Malcolm X’s By any means necessary speech. It speaks directly to the urgency of obtaining both freedom, and equality.
